Gas extinguishing systems for wind turbines:

VentusSafe - the innovative extinguishing system for wind turbines

Describtion
Germany takes a leading position in the world in wind power. With the extinguishing system VentusSafe by KIDD-DEUGRA the large plants gets even safer.

Wind turbinesCatalysts for fires in wind turbines can be:
Lightning,
overheated hydrocarbons such as mineral oils, greases and synthetic oil, used in gearboxes, transformers and couplers,
Electrical fires in cabinets, distributors, generators, rectifiers and air conditioning components.

In Germany are currently nearly 14,000 wind turbines installed, more than in any other country in the world. These facilities currently produce about 12,000 megawatts of power per year, which corresponds to a share of around 2.6 percent on the German net electricity consumption. After a reference of the federal government, 12.5 percent of electricity requirements should be made from renewable energy sources until the year 2010 (whose share is currently at eight percent). But the large rotor systems are vulnerable to damage, which in turn deter the insurance companies and the insurance is expensive.

Turbine schemaOnly in the last year the damage of wind turbines causes a average of approximately 40 million euros. Especially fires are dangerous for the up to 100 meters high towers. In these heights is a deletion of the fire by the fire brigade impossible. Especially the engine house (gondola) suits high demands to an extinguishing system. During operation vibrations, fluctuations and dust formation by the abrasion of the brake device are generated. Due to the poor accessibility at high altitude is an automatic and maintenance-friendly system required. The fighting system VentusSafe now offers the optimal solution for the difficult conditions.
The VentusSafe-extinguishing system for wind power has two components: the fine spraying extinguishing system for liquid fires and the gas extinguishing system for electric fires in closed institutions.
The VentusSafe energy system operates independently and is nearly maintenance free. Maintenance work is mainly limited to visual inspections.

The fine spraying extinguishing technic
DüseThe good effect of fine spraying extinguishing systems based primarily on the high heat of vaporization of the water, supplied by the large surface of fine droplets:
Special nozzles produce a fine water mist.
The cooling effect of fire leads to disruption of the thermal reaction. Through the simultaneous cooling of the environment, solid or liquid substances are no longer ignite. Beside the cooling effect with the fine spraying extinguishing systems also an embroidery effect is achieved.

The VentusSafe system operates with a high-extinguishing fluid which is specially designed for the fighting of such kind of fires. In addition to the above-mentioned advantages of the fine spraying extinguishing technic, a thin, extremely slip aqueous film and a thick barrier layer, which reliably against a restraint protects ignition will be educted by the wet extinguishing system. The wet extinguishing system is controlled by an patented automatically trigger pulsed element. Increases the temperature above 79 ° C, a fast sprinkler opens and provides a pneumatic pulse, with which the extinguishing valve of the tank is opened. Optionally the system can be activated manually, remote electric (12V or
24V) by pressing a print button .

The gas extinguishing technic
The extinguishing effect of gases is based on the oxygen displacement, which generates a suffocation effect. For closed electrical hazards, the extinguishing of CO2 gas is used. The extinguishing agent will also be released by a sprinkler element , which opens after crossing the required temperature the cylinder. The release temperatur VdS is in accordance with the guidelines at 30 ° C above the maximum expected temperature in the defined scope.
